Jason Barrett's 'artist statement'"It turns out that an eerie type of chaos can lurk just behind a facade of order and yet, deep inside the chaos lurks an even eerier type of order." Douglas Hofstadter. This work is based on chaos. Chaotic systems can easily be misinterpreted for randomness despite the fact that they are always deterministic. The images composing my backgrounds are created by adjusting the initial starting conditions and applying the same formula any number of times. The original state can be as ordered as a photograph or as random as abstract distortions, the end result is still chaotic imagery. The imagery created by the work evokes similar emotional responses as a psychological inkblot test. Obviously, the response varies among individuals allowing the viewer to infer ideas about the concepts behind the work that were not the motivations during its origin. Any emotional or conceptual basis for the work can only be accounted for during the initial stages of the background composition and the essential data used to create the final product. Ultimately these emotions and concepts are still present throughout the work but they are not explained to the viewer because they are distorted by orderly application of chaos. I believe Henry Miller said it best, "Chaos is the score upon which reality is written." Whatever is viewed in my work is the result of the viewer's perceptions of reality. email: The Artist all

abstract:--I went from a nipple shield (yeah that used to be mine) to this. It has energy and movement. I wanted more.
|
|
abstract_sphered:--Very interesting. I could see the beginnings of ordered chaos. Plus it looked great on mix CDs I made for my friends!
|
|
abstract_sphered_cubed:--Infinite.
Fractalish, this what I imagine the 4th dimension to look like.
I liked this process, but somewhere between sphered and cubed, I
felt I was losing something. As if I was stepping further away,
so I tried to play between these to. Changing and bending and twisting.
Until I had the fires of hell and I saw my angel standing there.
It was a profound experience, I hope you enjoy stepping through.
This one night resulted in countless 'Untitled' nights were I would
create and destroy.

Untitled: -- This was one of my firsts and still is one of my favorites. In my advanced digital class I constructed a lightbox and printed this on a transparency. It lives outside the computer now, but it belongs on the computer.

eyed: -- I had constructed an evil eye for myself one night and found I could make it infinitely more evil.
|
|
spirits: -- another angel that just appeared one night.

And finally,
the mraytribute: -- Man Ray's "Tears" is one
of my favorite images. What are glass tears anyway? Well it inspired
me.

mr-detail: -- A closeup of this place.

bonus:--And if you've made it this far, you deserve a little something for your trouble. Here's one for you
