When is a Rescue not a Rescue?
Our hearts go out to Albuquerqe schipperke affectionado Jaclyn, who this week put down a dog she had tried in vain to 'rescue' from certain death at the shelter. The dog's name was Chi Chi. He was seven years old and though his appearance was greatly healthy, it was obvious that he was still working out his scars/pain/triggers from years of abuse. If approached in certain ways, he would snap and bite nearby humans/dogs from these apparent 'triggers'. Most moments that I was with him though, he was a delightfully smart and attentive happy dog. The rescuer and her partner have two other schips. Each Schip was attacked a time or two by Chi Chi this past month. Jaclyn and her husband both have bruises from bites received from Chi Chi. Jaclyn emails: It has been a horrible week since Chi Chi was put down Tuesday evening. There was something terribly wrong with that poor guy. Please see my post to the SRY2K list for all the gory details. Diamond and Jubal are on the mend, but both were very aggressive themselves for several days after his departure. At what point do you put down a dog for a behavioral reason? I have been very sad and confused about this question for most of this week after meeting up with Chi Chi. I used to be a teacher of the Gifted and Talented. A lot of the kids were super smart but their behaviors and inner beings/self-esteem need a lot of work. It would've been hard for me to expel a kid whose behavior was bad. If dogs reincarnate, I hope he comes back soon into a happier situation. I know too, that everytime I let our THREE SCHIPPITEERS in the door and count one, two, three, I will wonder how it would've been with a number four named Chi Chi. Wednesday, November 06, 2002
The dogs are INSANE this week...Melanie is into decorating the new dog room rug...the great Jordano is hop, skip, and jump happy...and even the kind old man Skipper is having a bout of Happy Feet with the season change. Today we vacuum the house and everyone gets a bath. Tuesday, November 05, 2002
