Our beloved Stinky died Sunday night. He was a favorite of many a visitor to Bunnytown. Over his eight and a half years with us he saw the warren go through many changes. Stinkerama taught us a great deal about bunnies and life. He had more personality than some people I know. He was a survivor. We miss him dearly and know that his essence goes on.

Stinky was the first rabbit we adopted as a young bunny. When he was an adolescent, Oloroso looked a little like a skunk. Somehow “Stinky” fit the bill. He lived up to his name. When visitors asked if the bunnies bite, I would answer, “No, except for Stinky.” He loved to be petted by us, but hated being picked up.

He kept to himself, but definitely contributed to future generations. As he grew older he became Grandpa Stinky, the cantankerous Abuelo who turns to jelly when the young-uns are around. Old Man Stinkers doted on the little bunnies who basked in his aura. Between litters Viejo would grow impatient. In his old age, he was rewarded with room service: greens and grains delivered to his “door.” A couple months ago we adopted Lew, a young adult rabbit who shared a kinship with Stinky.

Rabbits don't spend much time grieving. Life is change and they accept that. Stinky Bunny was an exceptional soul and it may take some time to say goodbye. For his part I'm sure Stinky is happily hopping about a green field of never-ending weeds!

Lew and Stinky

Today we are sad as our Eldest Bunny, Stinky, passed away. His most recent friend and companion, Lew,* will sorely miss him - as will we.

*For Lew Wallace, author of Ben Hur and former governor of New Mexico, who once said, "All calculations based on our experiences elsewhere fail in New Mexico.''

Welcome to the Bunnytown Caverns! Only the occasional bat, but lots of lagomorphs in the unique human-rabbit collaboration that is the terrain of Bunnytown. The warren seems to get a partial remodel every time we have a new litter and currently the surface looks rather lunar, as seen below. Somewhat treacherous for humans, but the buns seem to enjoy it. During the races around Bunnytown, occuring daily at dawn and dusk, it looks as if it might be a five-star bunny rollercoaster!

Here are some thoughts and words of Don Miguel Ruiz
to get us through this the CHAOS of ELECTION WEEK...

Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean.
Avoid using the word to speak against yourself
or to gossip about others. Use the power of your
word in the direction of truth and love.

Nothing others do is because of you. What
others say and do is a projection of their own
reality, their own dream. When you are immune
to the opinions and actions of others, you won't
be the victim of needless suffering.

Find the courage to ask questions and to express
what you really want. Communicate with others
as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings,
sadness, and drama. With just this one agree-
ment, you can completely transform your life.

Your best is going to change from moment to
moment; it will be different when you are
healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circum-
stance, simply do your best, and you will avoid
self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.
